Composite Manufacturing

EDM designs, tools and manufactures composite components and assemblies for aerospace and other similar sectors requiring high product quality. We work from prototype development through to production supported with in-house tooling, machining and AS9100D / ISO9100-2015 quality control.

Why EDM

· Quality:AS9100D and ISO 9001 across composites, machining and mechanical assembly. JOSCAR Registered and Cyber Essentials Plus. MOD site audited.

· Integrated one stop capability: Design, stress analysis, precision tooling, 5-axis complex composite machining, mechanical assembly and in-service support.

· Scale and capacity: 140,000 sq ft facility in Greater Manchester with ~160 staff and excellent transport links.

Materials & Processes

· Composites: Epoxy pre-preg tooling and parts in carbon, glass, Kevlar and hybrid laminates (including carbon-Kevlar), plus copper-infused lightning-strike panels. Honeycomb and solid-core sandwich construction.

· GRP: Patterns, tooling and components using polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy systems with cores and fabrics.

· Both in an out of Autoclave Production:

Autoclave & Cure

· Digitally controlled autoclave with real-time data logging and historical recall. Up to 250 °C and 100 psi; 1.7 m Ø × 4.5 m long internal envelope.

Tooling, Machining & Assembly

· Tooling: In-house design and manufacture of composite and GRP tools for accurate, repeatable lay-ups.

· Dust controlled lay-up areas.

· CNC: 5-axis milling/turning for metallic and non-metallic components, integrated with composite workflows. Belotti FLU 2617 with a 2m x 2m bed.

· Mechanical & systems integration: Complex mechanical assemblies with electrical systems where required.

Quality & Approvals

· Standards: AS9100 Rev D / ISO 9001-2015

· Customer approvals: UK MOD, among others.

· Security & compliance: MOD audited; Cyber Essentials Plus; JOSCAR registered

How We Work

Requirements & concept: Translate scope/TNA into concept (SolidWorks®), materials and safety/regulatory factors.

Design reviews: PDR/CDR.

Manufacture & verification: Controlled cure, CNC finishing, assembly and test. FAT/SAT with certificates of conformity.

Support: Training, maintenance and in-service upgrades; consistently rated “Excellent”.

Typical Deliverables

· Composite components and sub-assemblies.

· Pre-preg Carbon Fibre and GRP tooling.

· Honeycomb sandwich panels, lightning-strike-protected panels.

· Composite-metal hybrid assemblies incorporating latching mechanisms.
