HND success for EDM craft apprentice

EDM is pleased to announce that its apprentice, Jamie McKenna, has successfully passed his Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering with a “Distinction”. Jamie joined EDM in June 2008 as the company’s first craft apprentice and embarked upon a long course of study at college combined with on-the-job training at EDM.

Tony Bermingham, EDM’s Managing Director says:

“We are delighted that Jamie’s hard work has paid off and we congratulate him on his achievement. He has shown immense maturity, focus and dedication to his learning and EDM is proud to have played a part in his professional development and skill-based training.”

At EDM, Jamie has spent time working in several departments both in the office and the factory including planning and design; interactive woodwork; engineering on machines; electrical; lathes; manual milling and CNC milling. Jamie’s class-based curriculum at Tameside College has included modules such as engineering science; mechanical principles; engineering design; industrial robot technology and applications of pneumatics and hydraulics.

Prior to undertaking his HND, Jamie achieved his National Diploma Certificate (HNC) and was singled out for his abilities when he was awarded “Apprentice of the Year” in 2012 by Oldham Training Centre. On his recent HND course, Jamie successfully achieved a “distinction” in all sixteen of his modules of study.

Jamie McKenna adds:

“It has been a demanding number of years and a huge commitment to learn my craft but it has been worth all of the effort to achieve this broad on-the-job experience at EDM and my NVQ, HNC and HND qualifications – achieving a distinction in my HND was the icing on the cake!”
